Cusco is a city located in southeastern Peru, near the Sacred Valley (Urubamba Valley) of the Andes mountain range. The city of Cusco has a population around of 300,000, triple the figure of 20 years ago.

Situated on the eastern end of the Knot of Cusco, its altitude is around 3,300 m (10,800 feet).

It became the most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru and, after the Peruvian War of Independence, was made the capital of the Republic of Peru. Today around one-third of the Peruvian population lives in the metropolitan area.
